Happy Thursday! Well, Thursday is almost over, so I hope your day was fantastic! In case you're just joining in, I post every Thursday about the awesome things that have gone on in my life over the past week. It really helps to put things in perspective, especially when you're having a bad day. Studies show that grateful people lead happier, more productive lives.
This is the awesome stuff in my past week:

We are at Rick's parents for a few days. We will be getting things ready for moving in. Painting, cleaning and that sort of thing
I've knit the most perfect cowl/neck warmer/infinity scarf. The size is absolutely perfect. Right after casting off, I tried it on, and I am so incredibly happy with it. I'm going to knit a few more in different colours, and I'll have photos of them hopefully next week
I started a new work out plan that I am quite happy with. It's too soon to notice any kind of results, but I will soon, hopefully!
My ridiculous back pain is finally starting to subside. I have a chiropractor appointment tomorrow to hopefully kick the rest of it to the curb

And Now For Something Completely Different!

On Etsy, and some of the blogs I follow, I've been seeing different cold weather head bands. I decided to try my hand at making some.
I grabbed some basic worsted yarn (which is actually kind of hard to come by in my stash!) and cast on a couple stitches. I made the ties at either end, and increased in the middle. They're long enough to wrap around your head and fit snugly without feeling like it's going to squeeze your brain. I'm going to tie in the ends and bring some into Trinkets, Treasures and the Truly Unique this week or next. I'll see how they are received there, and possibly make some more.
I also want to try some with different stitch patterns. I think they would look great in seed stitch. Or a nice wide cable.
So many possibilities!

Monday Magic: February 6, 2012

It's Monday! Last week, I started a series of posts that I am calling Monday Magic (no magicians involved, I just like alliteration) Every week, I will post a few awesome things I came across during my travels through the internet. They might be Etsy items, recipes, clothing or something else entirely.

This bag from Marbled. I definitely want one of these bags! The seller makes loads of gorgeous, affordable bags, so I may order more than one!

This print is from Rachael at TreeTalker. She has some phenomenal stuff. I was taking a look through her store, and this painting jumped out at me. I don't know if it's the swirls in the background, or the tiny red leaves, but I really love it!

I love anything that is notebook paper printed. Shirts, bedding, pillows, you name it, those blue and red lines make me want it. I don't know what it is! This pillow is a prime example of that. There are other pillows available in the shop with poetry and prose screened on them. Those are great and all, but this plain one is calling my name. (plus, it's organic cotton!!!)

What is your most exciting project this week?
This week I'm working on a giant puff knitted up for a blog friend!

I just ride through it. I figure when it's time for me to start creating again, I will.

How do you feel about Valentine's Day?
I love Valentine's Day, but then we celebrate super chill; usually it's just pizza and a movie.

My exciting project: a full male size zipped raglan cardingan
This is a long overdue gift with a year + in the making and not half-way there yet.
Cardigans and sweaters are such an intimidating project!

How do you get out of a creative slump?
I eat chocolate while rearranging my supplies: yarn, hooks, books and needles. Getting to see what I have, what I have left half way done gets me started. Sketching is always a good thing.
I think I'll need to try the chocolate trick!

How do you feel about Valentine's Day?
Ever since we live our life dictated by an agenda and a calendar, is always good and neccesary to have a day marked for love too!!

What is your most exciting project this week?
I've currently started making hats for a children's hospital. The hats are for children who are battling cancer. They had a need for adorable boy hats, since most people make cute little girl hats with flowers. I'm excited to send the boys bunches of monkey and bear hats!
Making baby hats feels so fulfilling. I knit for a local hospital, as well, and there is a shortage of boys hats there, as well. Babies in monkey and bear hats will be adorable!

What are you top 5 favourite recording artists?
Stars, Ingrid Michaelson, The Weepies, Sufjan Stevens, and Azure Ray.

How do you get out of a creative slump?
Whenever I'm in a creative slump.. I know I need to focus on something else. I normally take the doggies on an adventure to the canyons and play a game of fetch. I also bring my camera around and take lots of inspiring photos of nature!
I wish my dog was as interested in adventures as Charlie and Wicket are! He's happy just lounging all day!

How do you feel about Valentine's Day?
I'm excited for it! It will be my second Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. I don't know what our plans are quite yet.. I've got to think of something!!

I can't believe it's February! January passed by so quickly. This is what has been awesome this week:

I was Rick's birthday on the 30th. We went out for Red Lobster, Vietnamese and Sushi on different days to celebrate
I started working on a brand new knitting project. I'm still trying to work out the sizing, but I'm loving it already! Once I get things figured out, I will show pictures. I may even write up a pattern.
We gave notice at our apartment. In 60 days, we will no longer be living here! I almost can't believe it
I got a couple sales in the Etsy shop this week

I am working on a kindle fire sleeve. I made one but not thrilled with the results so I am reworking the design and will knit it up and see how that goes.

How do you get out of a creative slump?
I read dr seuss books, talk to my friends, go for a walk or listen to music. Basically I walk away from it all, recharge my batteries and try again. I actually Blogged about my creative process here.
Dr. Seuss seems like a great way to inspire!

How do you feel about Valentine's Day?
Not really into it, but hey if my husband decides to buy flowers and candy I totally wouldn't mind. Not that he ever would :-)

Monday Magic!

HappyMonday, everyone! I am starting a new weekly post on my blog that I am calling Monday Magic! (I have a thing for alliteration) I will be posting a few things every Monday that have caught my eye in the week prior. They might be Etsy items, YouTube videos, blog posts or something else entirely! Stay tuned for some awesome stuff!

This gorgeous cuff from WillOaks Studio is absolutely amazing! I love the colour combination. I think it would look lovely with just dark jeans and a t-shirt. It's available in several other colours, as well.

These are so cool. They're egg shaped planters made of porcelain, made by EcoElements. They come with wheat grass seeds if you're within the US, or you can get them without seeds (at a discount!) if you're international. They would be awesome on the table at a wedding for name place cards. I think they'd look especially cute with herbs growing in them, too.

Happy Thursday, everyone! This is what's awesome in my life this past week:

I've been watching Dirty Jobs, which always entertains
I finished knitting two orders for a friend of a friend
We bought a half dozen avocados last time we went grocery shopping, and I've been eating them pretty regularly
I bought an ad on Etsy, and I've gotten a bit more traffic than usual
I busted my butt yesterday at the gym, and I am really happy with what I accomplished
I got a new blog sponsor that will start advertising in February, and will be sticking around for a few months

One of My New Projects!

Lately, I've been thinking more and more about the need to diversify my crafting repertoire to sell at craft shows and in my Etsy shop. As much as I love knitting, I don't sell much between the end of January, until September or October. That just won't do when I have bills to pay. I thought about doing summery, non-clothing knits, but I just couldn't get into the few different items I tried. So, I tried a few completely different things.
I started with the earrings. I bought loads of supplies over a year ago, and I am still working through that stash. This basket is only a portion of those available at Trinkets, Treasures and The Truly Unique. I really enjoy making earrings. It can be a little tedious, but I can listen to podcasts while I do it.

At the beginning of January, I bought a heart shaped paper punch from the scrap booking section at Michael's. I am very, very rarely in that part of the store; I usually just beeline to the back where the yarn is. I've seen several Etsy shops selling different themed garlands and buntings, and I absolutely love them. I wish I had a place in my apartment where I could display a whole pile of them. Or, a few at a time, and rotate them with the seasons and holidays. (the next place we move, I want to have my own office/crafting space that I can decorate how I want, and I would definitely have garland/bunting) I decided I would try my hand making garlands, starting with a Valentine theme. I punched and punched and punched hearts in pink and red, and also from the pages of a trashy romance novel. I combined them in a few different ways, varying the space between the hearts, as well as the order of the colours. I sewed them up on Rick's sewing machine in a fun couple hours. I brought all of them into the shop last week. I was just tagged in this photo on Facebook, because the garlands are on display in the window. It's not the greatest photo, but it definitely does the job of showing them off. Once I sell a few of these, I plan on getting a few other punch shapes and do them for other holidays.

I've made quite a few pairs of earrings today. Tomorrow, I will check them for sturdiness, and then photograph them and list some in my shop
Winston is currently being adorable, pushing his toy into my lap so I will play with him
I've made some good progress on many of my 101 goals
I added a new goal, which is really good: #75 "Spend no money for a week"
Rick and I have been making delicious food the past couple days
I have a job interview tomorrow
I put a good chunk of money on my credit card this week to work towards paying it off
I got an order from Rick's mom's friend. I finished making almost all of it already. I amy need to go pick up more yarn, though...
I am going to start getting changed out of my pyjamas more often. I did that today on Rick's insistence, and I feel like I've been really productive.

Some Of The New Earrings

I ordered some earring making supplies a couple weeks ago from Motto Miquette. First off, I am so incredibly happy with what she sent me! High quality, exactly what I wanted. She also customized listings for me, so that I would have even numbers to make into earrings. I will definitely be ordering from her again.

I have gotten a great response to the new items in my shop. The really great thing about these is that I have several of each style, so I don't have to photograph as many items! I can take two photos of each item, and just swap the main one for the different listings. It's great!

A LeeLee Hats Donation

Yesterday, Tracy from LeeLee Hats and I taught a group of Brownies how to use knitting looms. That was an adventure, let me tell you. At their age, between 6 and 9 years old, many of them don't have the attention span to make one of the hats. In the end, we had to restart most of the hats. We said we'd bring them back today for a group photo, so it was a mad hustle last night fixing them all up.
This was what was next to me for most of the night. We went assembly line style for the most part. I undid all that needed undoing and wrapped all the yarn into balls to keep them from tangling. Then I made all the hats. That's where this pile comes from. Believe it or not, this is only about halfway through. Tracy and her sister Kim kept making more hats when I started sewing the hats up.
Once they were all sewn up, I counted how many I had made from the beginning, and I was really surprised to see twelve whole hats. In just a few hours! We are definitely considering making hats like this more often.
I'm really happy with the progress I've made on my 101 project. In addition to these 12, I made another three at home in the last couple days.

More About my 101 List

The 101 list I am working on is also known as a Day Zero project. You set yourself 101 goals to accomplish in 1001 days. These goals are to challenge you, and to improve yourself.
I only went to the gym once this week, but I will be working out at home tonight, so I am counting that as a pass.
I made a few dozen pairs of earrings yesterday. Not sure on the exact count, but I will be updating that goal once I count them.
These tiny hearts are my new favourite earrings. They're only 5mm across!!
Not much else to report in my life. Oh wait! It finally snowed today. Not a whole lot, but enough to make me happy. And I bought shorts today. I figured snow, sure, why not buy shorts! They are wool, though, if that's any consolation!

Four Finished Scarves

Since I started my 101 list, I've started and finished four scarves and two dishcloths.

These are the four scarves. The green and black is a cone of green acrylic blend and a chunky black acrylic. The creamy, hard to see one is a skein of Wool Ease Thick and Quick in "Wheat" all done in seed stitch. The next one is the same yarn in "Charcoal" also in seed stitch. The last one is the same chunky black acrylic as the first, with a ball of awesome vintage Italian wool/acrylic blend that I've had in my stash for a while. It's quite long, and very warm.
As you can see, I still have ends to weave in. I will hopefully get those done today to bring them down to Phog. I haven't checked my sales there since my actual birthday. I'm 80% of the way to my low balling goal, and about a third of the way to my "wouldn't it be awesome if I sold this much!?" goal.

I am really happy with my progress on the "Knit 5 miles of yarn" goal. I am at just over 1400 feet, which is about a quarter of a mile. Not bad at all, considering this is only one week of knitting.

I have lots of project ideas. The one major thing stopping me is that my yarn stash is a complete mess. I know certain yarn exists, but I have no idea where to find it! I have sorted out a couple drawers in my storage area for yarn for charity knitting. Most of the stuff I do is for Lee Lee hats, so it's mostly baby yarns and small balls of various colours, too small to do anything else with.

Nancy of nfall2rt is back again this month! Let's see what she's been up to.

How were your holidays? Did you do/see/taste anything awesome?
We traveled to my in-law's house in Georgia for the holidays. The trip was long (we drove the 12 hours) but very fun. It was great to see my hubby to be's parents again. We don't see them that often! His sister, who just had her second child, also lives there. I got to go to the hospital to see the baby who was premature and was not "freed" until a few days after we got home. It was also fun playing with their 3 year old who I hadn't yet met! Mr. M & I love cooking, so we made the holiday meal- prime rib with au jus, twice baked potatoes, and veggies.
Sounds yummy!

Any New Year's Resolutions?
I do not like to make resolutions as they usually fizzle, but I like to encourage myself to continue trying new things and improving in areas that I already do or love. I will continue to hike at least once a month, keep up with my other health and fitness routines, and at some point, I'd like to buy a pomegranate and learn how to eat it (stupid, yes, but still new to me).
Staying healthy is a great goal. I'm working on that, myself. Also, pomegranates are delicious! There are lots of youtube videos to help you with this one.

What do you want the most for your business this year?
This is one area of my life where I whole-heartedly embrace goals. At the top of the list for this year is to increase income and localize my business through getting my work into a brick and mortar shop and participating in more craft shows.

What are you most looking forward to this year?
Easy! This year I will get married! Mr. M & I decided we didn't want a normal church wedding. After discussing exactly what we want out of it, we've decided to take our wedding out to sea: we'll be going on a cruise with close family and friends.
That sounds lovely! I can't wait to see photos and read all about it.

What is your current favourite blog?
There's a few fantastic blogs out there. But my favorite hands down was created by a girl I went to art school with: Riding Bareback Beside A Train. It's brave. It's honest. It's artful. It's the most seriously written work of dedicated love I've ever seen. Some posts make me cry- others laugh, but every single post makes me long to consider the art in everything I do.

Welcome Back, Rachael!

Rachael of Talk2TheTrees/TreeTalker is back again this month!

How were your holidays? Did you do/see/taste anything awesome?
Oh dear.. my holidays this year have been a mess! Just in two weeks, my car broke down, my house flooded, I had a huge vacation planned, and the day I got back I caught a very bad cold! On top of all that I had holiday orders to get out. It's been less than a happy holidays.. but I'm doing my best to still see the light in things! After the flood we were able to put our Christmas tree back up, and rewrap the presents. I'm hoping to get over this nasty cold by Christmas.
This Holiday season has been quite the test for me. I have to try extra hard to be happy. Sometimes it makes more sense to just be sad.. to give up. But it takes lots of guts to face the problems with a smile. As all this was happening, I had two options.. to either give in, cry and be sad.. or toughen up and fight back with a smile.
I felt so bad reading Rachael's blog and tweets about all these things. I know the feeling when everything goes wrong at once, and it seems like it will never get better.

Any New Year's Resolutions?
I would love for my art shop to grow a bit more! Aside from that, I'd like to drink more water, and take my doggies on more walks.
Those are three great resolutions!

What do you want the most for your business this year?
I would love to eventually close my hat shop, or at least slow down sales so I can focus on my art more. As much as I love knitting and making hats, it's very time consuming when I just want to paint!

What are you most looking forward to this year?
I'm looking forward to looking forward to moving. (There was no typo there!) I have plans to start looking for a new place to live in the next few months.. so I'm looking forward to looking forward to that! I know that if I start looking now I will get too anxious and excited.. when I'm still in contract with this place!

What is your current favourite blog?
NieNie Dialogues has been a favorite of mine for a while now!

The reception last night was awesome!
I saw my friends Marla and Matt, whom I haven't see in a while
My friend Crissi came to the reception, and brought me a cute little potted flowering plant
My friend Christine also came, and gave me an awesome felted bowl. I'll have to post a photo of this!
I'm already making progress on my 101 list. I finished a dishcloth, tried a new beer, updated my numbers for followers and fans and more!
I feel like I'm starting to get over this cold

How were your holidays? Did you do/see/taste anything awesome?
Our holidays were great! it was our little Owen's first Christmas, so we got to experience it all through his little eyes! And because he's so young, we'll get to do it all over again next year too!

Any New Year's Resolutions?
I'm setting goals to do less, own less, and streamline my life. Everything from my wardrobe to my knitting supplies is fair game - should be fun!
This is such an excellent goal. Like I said last month, I wish I could part with "stuff" as easily as Robyn.

What do you want the most for your business this year?
I'd love to know I'm doing the most good with my blog this year. I'm taking my focus away from my shop and bringing it back to knitting less with more, and making as much for others as I can!

What are you most looking forward to this year?
All the firsts with Owen - seeing him love playing in the snow a little bit, learning to crawl and then walk, going swimming - I just can't wait!
He's so adorable. I can't wait to watch him grow up, too!

What is your current favourite blog?
My current favorite blog is Casey Leigh. I love that she is exactly who she is, and she makes no apologies for it. She owns her heart, her strengths and her weaknesses, and focuses her blogging time on what makes her the most happy - and through it she's gained a steady and loyal following!

Happy Thursday, everyone! I started these posts a while back to gather some great things that are going on in my life.

I had my final Christmas gathering yesterday. It was mostly uneventful, which is a good thing.
I picked up a new tool today for my business. Once I get that started, I will post about it.
I received some pretty good gifts for the holidays. Mostly gift cards, which I always appreciate.
I officially booked my art show at Phog. I have a musician booked to play the opening reception, which will be on my birthday. You can find more information about that Here.

This year has been so up and down for me, but overall, I would like to think it was mostly good. I started my Etsy shop, I quit my job to knit full time, I went to Iceland, I acquired my knitting machines (more on these soon, hopefully!) and so many more amazing things have happened.
I hope 2011 was a good year for all of you, and I hope 2012 is even better.
I have many Christmas festivities coming up, and I am incredibly excited to see some of my relatives.
I have lots of things planned for 2012 and I can't wait to share them with you!

Happy Thursday everyone! I started this weekly post a little while back. Its purpose is to be as positive as possible about what's gone on in my life for the previous week.

I sold a shawl and a cowl to a friend of mine. She seemed super happy with them, which is nice because one of them is a gift.
I worked at Trinkets, Treasures and the Truly Unique a couple days ago, and again today. It was nice to get out of the house and be surrounded by crafty things for inspiration.
I was an extra for my friend Crissi's music video. It's a fantastic song, and the video is going to be absolutely phenomenal. I will definitely share it here when it is finished.
I have an open schedule for the holidays, so I will be able to go to tall the festivities between my families and Ricks.
Rick and I went for lunch with his friends yesterday at the Vietnamese place we go to often. The food was excellent, and the company was great.
We saw Girl With The Dragon Tattoo yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. I may watch the original versions of The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest just so I can see them sooner. I was also thinking about reading the books.

Progress on the Purple and Cream Shawl

Back at the beginning of the month, I posted about the shawl I was starting for myself. I set it down for a little while to work on other projects, but I picked it back up tonight due to boredom. I have SO MUCH YARN but nothing is calling to me.

This is where I'm at so far. It will definitely need blocking when I am finished. I am loving this yarn, though. It's super soft, slightly thick and thin, and the colours are amazing. I would love to work with more handspun in the future.
I favourited a bunch of patterns on Ravelry tonight for my next projects. I still have some nicer yarns that I will be using for projects for myself. Other than Richard, I don't really have anyone in my circle who would appreciate hand knits. Most of the people who do would just purchase them from me before I even have the chance of giving one to them. Oh well, more hand knits for me!
Tomorrow, I am working at Trinkets, Treasures and the Truly Unique all day. I have a bunch of knitting lined up, and some knitting podcasts to listen to, as well. I am super excited for this.

How Much Would You Pay?

I just finished knitting a matching scarf and fingerless glove set. Currently, I'm debating knitting a matching hat. I'm not sure how much I would charge for a set like this.
-The scarf is about 6 feel long, including fringe.
-The gloves cover just past the wrist.
-The hat would be slightly slouchy.

How much would you pay for such a set? I charge about $20 -25 for a similar scarf, and my hats are $25-30. How much should the set for all three accessories be?

It's Thursday! A few weeks back, I started an Awesome Thursday post series. Basically, I just post about awesome things going on in my life.

I spent today with my parents shopping in Michigan. Picked up some groceries and some things I had shipped to a friend of the family to save on shipping costs.
Started an awesome scarf with some of the cones of yarn I have (I will post a photo of it soon!)
Started working on a press release for Trinkets, Treasures and the Truly Unique, the shop I currently have stock in. I'll hopefully finish that tonight.
I got all my Christmas shopping done. I still haven't gotten anything for Rick yet, but I will probably combine his Christmas and Birthday gift into one.
I renewed a few items in my Etsy shop. I've gotten quite a few views on them, too.
Taught some Girl Guides how to use Knifty Knitters. That went better than I expected.
Got most of the laundry done. I will be finishing that tomorrow, probably.

How did you start hand making?
My father's side of the family is very creative; he is a furniture builder and my aunt is a painter and art teacher. I've always been exposed to art and making and learned to appreciate both the quality of handmade items and experience a drive to make myself as a child. Once I went to college I decided to study sculpture & textiles, and earned a degree in teaching as well. But it wasn't until after several years of teaching art that I realized the impulse to create full time was being neglected. So September of 2008 I opened my etsy shop and that's where my second life began!

This holiday season I started selling at craft shows. A goal for this year is to get my line into some brick & mortar shops around Baltimore!

What do you do other than create?
I love nature. I grew up in a valley surrounded by the Shenandoah mountains and can never seem to get enough of them. I go hiking and camping quite frequently during the spring, summer, and fall, and occasionally during the winter as well! Additionally, my fiancée and I love cooking. He almost went to culinary school, but went into another field instead. Even still he's retained his passion for cooking and passed it on to me. I find that it's just another medium for creativity.
It's great having a loved one interested in cooking.
What does your workspace look like?
We live in a row house in Baltimore with an open floor plan, so my studio is wedged between the front sitting area and the kitchen. Since it's right when people walk in, I have to keep it a bit on the neat side. I am very fortunate to have a giant Ikea wardrobe with deep drawers and shelves to store my inventory and materials. I've also got a long table for sewing and blogging. Next to that is my drafting table, which is mostly used for spreading out pieces waiting for linings and fabric cutting these days.
I wish my space was as tidy as this. Hopefully one day it will happen.

What is your most indispensable tool, that you would be completely lost without?
My most indispensable tool is a pair of size 7 bamboo knitting needles. I typically use worsted weight yarn for my bags and purses, so I use these needles almost daily!
I love working with bamboo needles as well!

Time to Upgrade My Tools!

I have been knitting since December 2001. For the most part, my knitting needles have been metal or plastic, bought cheaply from whatever store had them. I have a couple pairs of bamboo needles, but that's it. I want to start knitting items on circular needles that require shorter lengths than the 20 some-odd inches most of mine are. I've found some awesome hat patterns that I want to knit, but I hate using double points. I understand how to do the magic loop, and I want to use that method to get some new types of items made.

Here is my problem:
What brand of interchangeable needles should I go with? This is going to be an investment that I want to keep using until my old age, so I want something that can last that long.
I'm going to post in the Ravelry forums about this, and hopefully get some good feedback. In the mean time, tell me about your favourite knitting needles, interchangeable or not.

A Little Knitting For Myself

Last night, I started knitting a shawl for myself. My Boneyard Shawl is great, but I want some variety! I am using two skeins of hand spun that I purchased at Art In The Park this past summer.
I wound them, by hand, in balls roughly the size of grape fruits. The purple is such a lovely colour, and it will be striped with the creamy natural.
I'm doing a basic triangle shawl from the centre out, in stockinette stitch. Nothing too fancy. I tried to find a pattern to use, but nothing fit my criteria. I needed something that is mindless enough to do while reading blogs, striped/colour working to use both of these skeins, and roughly worsted weight.
I will post progress photos as the shawl grows.

My home studio looks like a remodelation In progress, and here you won't find a sign appologizing for the inconvenience or the random location of my tools, yarns, projects and books.
My space is my territory. I do have a well sketch and thoroughly plan of what my near-future workspace/ home studio has to look like!!!! In the meantime this odd conner has and will continue to witness wonders!

The Made In Windsor Shows!

On Friday night, and Saturday during the day, I took part in two awesome Made In Windsor shows.
The Friday show was at a bar, which was really fun. I sold a ton! I had a financial goal to reach between the two shows, and I blew past it in the first one. I am so happy about this.

I sold both of these awesome items at the first show!
Saturday was equally exciting. There were a TON of people, and nearly all left with an armload of stuff from the various vendors.

How did you start hand making?

I've been making art since before I can remember, I just always knew that was what I wanted to do, and I would be lost without it. I studied art in college for two years before dropping out and trying to make it on my own. I'm still very happy with my decision to leave school. Aside from painting I also own a little hat shop where I make and sell animal hats and pixie hats, as well as other beanies of course.

Where do you sell, both online and elsewhere?

I sell online mostly, though I have sold some stuff to friends out of my house. This spring I will be sending 20 paintings to a show in Georgia, where they will be up for sale. I would love to do a craft show one day.. I just need to gain the courage first!
I can relate! Craft shows can be nerve-wracking. Nearly every show I do, I freak out and assume I won't sell anything, and that all my knits are terrible. I've slowly been getting better.

What do you do other than create?

I love to explore and go on little adventures. I take my doggies on a walk with a camera in hand. I love taking photos. I hardly ever have time to just sit and do nothing. I'm hardly ever board because I stay so busy.

What does your workspace look like?

It's currently a small corner of the house, gated from the animals. It is often very messy. But it works for now. Every day that I paint, I wheel out my portable studio and take up half the living room.

What is your most indispensable tool, that you would be completely lost without?

I would normally say a paintbrush, but since discovering my love for mixed media, I can paint with just about anything and like the results!

Hmm I love to be happy, and inspire others to be happy!

A Tiny Hat And Scarf

Here it is, the tiny hat and scarf set!
I have three sets like this in the shop right now, and I will try to have more after the shows on the weekend.
There are a few new items in the shop, a couple in each section, just about. I will be adding more as I have the chance. It can be tedious and time consuming to add all these items. I have been running out of adjectives to use to describe the new listings. Do you ever feel like that? There must be some rule somewhere that says you can only say the word "nice" or "purple" so many times in a day. I've tried using the thesaurus, but I am still stuck on the same words over and over again.

What do you to find better ways to describe your item?

Teeny Tiny Scarf

This scarf is part of my current knitting obsession. It's only an inch and a smidgen wide, by about 20 inches long. This is the first one I've made, and I will attempt to make at least 15 of them before Friday's show. There will hopefully be many more than that. They are part one of a two piece set. I will try to get a few listed in the shop this week, with better photos of course.
I didn't do any specials for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I was too busy this weekend to keep track of that stuff, and I am kind of kicking myself for it. I don't know if I would have even gotten any sales, but I'm sure just the increase in traffic would have been beneficial.
I am slowly working on goals I have for 2012. Sales, traffic, productivity and so on. I am going to be running this business like a real business.

A Successful Weekend

This weekend, I spent the majority at a craft show for LeeLee hats. I brought a few of my things with me to sell at the table, and surprisingly, I sold quite a bit! I only had a few hats and my earrings, but I am really happy. I have an order for a neck warmer to match a hat I sold, so I am making that right now.
I also received my first payment from Trinkets, Treasures & The Truly Unique. I sold three items a few days ago, and I am really happy with that.
I will soon be working on the advertiser posts for December, and there are still a couple spaces available!

Today will be the first post in a weekly series of posts where I post about awesome things going on in my life. It is a bit of a spin on the Very Good Things posts I used to do. I will be starting to post more frequently, as I now have more time nearly every day.

Here goes:

I finally brought my items into Doin' The Louvre. Really hoping some of them sell.
I started a new, non-knitting project last night. I will have them available at my craft shows, and I will also be listing some in the Etsy shop. Photos are forthcoming.
I finally picked up a table for my knitting machines and craft shows. It will be the same table for now, but I am really excited.
I'm almost done an order for my mom.
Room rearranging that is about to happen. Literally, I am finishing this post and going to do that with Rick. I will have an actual office space, and we will be getting a second desk in the future so we both have our own workspaces!

So much excitement here.

What's going on in your life that is awesome?

New Earrings!

Last week, I took some time to sort out some of the buttons I have for earring making. I work best when I do things in batches. Sort all the earrings, pair all the earrings, add all the posts, add all the backs etc etc.

This is about 25 pairs that I did today. On the other half of my work surface is another 30 or so pairs. The only reason I didn't finish these is because the smell of the adhesive was making my nose itch. I plan on finishing up the buttons I have sorted tomorrow.

I have three places I will be stocking earrings. The first is Trinkets and Treasures. I want to make sure I have a good variety there. The second is the Etsy shop. The earrings have been getting a lot of traffic lately, and I want to get some more pairs up there for the people doing their holiday shopping. The last place I will have earrings ready for is my two upcoming craft shows.

I am trying to keep my craft show and my Etsy stock as separate as possible. I am so afraid that I will sell a one of a kind pair of earrings in two places at the same time.

Hats, Hats, and More Hats!

Rick and I are out at his parents for a few days. I brought lots of yarn and my loom and I've been working on hats. I've finished four so far, and I'm working on a fifth. I'm hoping to have 6 done before we head home this afternoon.

I've decided that I will be bringing hats to Doin' The Louvre at Artcite. I'm trying to get several hats made of a few colours due to the submission rules. I'm allowed to have 10 different items, but I can have several of each. I also have more hats to bring to Trinkets, Treasures & Truly Unique.
All in all, I'm keeping myself busy and productive. I'm so excited about working for myself. I'm still figuring out exactly what I have to sell each month to cover my expenses.

Some Fantastic News

Recently, I quit my "real" job. I was unhappy with the way I was being treated, and it was ruining my relationship with those close to me. I am currently unemployed for the first time in about 6 years. This doesn't sound like a long time, but when you take into consideration that I am only 22, that's a good chunk of my life.

While I am "unemployed," I plan on officially starting my business. Registering, tax numbers, receipts and all that jazz. This is a huge step for me, and will definitely be an adventure. I'm not super organized, so that will be a hurdle I will have to overcome. I'm lucky that Rick's income can cover many of our household expenses while I get my business off the ground. I am also very lucky that he is helping me get everything started. He is my photographer, critic, and motivator. He also helps me make decisions as far as yarn colours, styles, and patterns. I really wouldn't be able to do this without him.

If any of you have any tips for me while I am starting on this new journey, please feel free to share them! I am always open to advice!

Blogging Business Artisans

In the time I have been on Etsy, I have joined and left several teams. Whether it's because I am too busy to keep up with their requirements, or I just don't feel like I fit in with them, there is often something that just doesn't mesh well. Blogging Business Artisans seems to be the opposite. I applied to them, and was accepted just a few hours later.

There are some fantastic artisans on this team. With under 25 members, it's a nice small team, where I am sure we will all get to know each other very well.
Here are a couple of my favourite items from some of the shops:

This is Nelly Bunny, made by MissMillificent. I don't know what it is about these creepy dolls that I find so appealing, but I love them all! Truth be told, it was hard to pick just one photo to post on here. Athena has several other dolls available, and they are priced between $20 and $160. She ships worldwide, and you have the option to purchase shipping insurance. For a work of art like these, I'd be willing to pay a couple extra dollars.

I love seeing other knitters hand made goods all over Etsy. This is one of Nancy's knit pouches. All of her zipper pouches are knit by hand, and have a hand-sewn lining put it, and a zipper. I have been seeing a lot of this blue/turquoise colour around lately, so I had to pick this one. You can find the rest of her goodies at nfall2rt.
Another fun fact: I've been following her blog for a while, and it's how I heard of this wonderful team.

The First Advertiser!

As soon as I'd posted the last update, I tweeted to a few fellow Etsians that I had ad space available. The first lovely lady to respond was Rachael of Talk2TheTrees.
I was really hoping she'd respond, because I absolutely adore her stuff! She knits and crochets, and paints, as well. Rachael has two shops on Etsy, one for yarn works, and one for her art. She also has adorable pups that I would let kiss me until the end of time.

I forgot to mention it in the original post, but advertising for the rest of November is free! Two dollars for a month and a half of advertising? You really can't afford not to! Have you ever been featured in a Treasury so beautiful, you just had to tell someone? I was adding all the treasuries I was in to a page on my blog, but I just couldn't keep up anymore. I am still saving screenshots of all of them, though.

A Knitting Machine, I Am

The last few days, I have been knitting more than usual. I've finished several hats, which is quite good. A friend may be buying some hats form me at a wholesale price for his clothing line. This could be amazing! His shirts sell quite well, and having my hats there would be great for both of us.
Once I get the "Okay" from him, I will be making two or three hats in each of a handful of colours. Another person will sew his custom tags on them as they are ordered from the store. I think this will be the best way for everyone involved. If I need hats, I will have them on hand and he won't have to worry about keeping a large amount of stock anywhere.

I've started using some of the yarn I received. The amount used so far has barely scratched the surface of what I have. There are about 4 large garbage bags full right now. I want to get that down to three before the New Year. That will include all the other yarn I have that isn't currently in my storage system. I guess this is a variation on my Knit The Stash challenge. Perhaps 2012 will be the stash busting year?

Lastly, I have added several items to my Etsy shop this past week. I am going to be photographing some scarves this week, hopefully. I want to have a good variety of items in the shop. I am not sure how many total items I should have, though. I don't like it when shops have more than about 8 pages of all different things for sale. I lose interest about halfway through.

I have been editing photos like crazy today! I finally have enough done to add them to my shop!
It's mostly cowls for now, but I will be adding some later tonight, and more tomorrow. I plan on adding a few everyday, in different sections, so I can increase my visibility.

Why Knit The Stash Is Over

Last week, I posted saying that my Knit The Stash challenge was over. I did have a good reason for this. Actually, 5 good reasons.
This isn't a very good photo, but it's four of the five GIANT garbage bags full of yarn I have received.
And, there is more to come. A lot of it is from companies that are no longer in existence, from what my Ravelry search tells me.
Somehow, my mom was connected with a woman who can no longer knit. She is in her 80s, and I believe she is moving into a nursing home.
There are bags upon bags of various yarns. From 100% cotton, to 10% angora, some mohair, a couple with cashmere, and so many more. I can't believe this! I will be passing a lot of it on to LeeLee hats, but I am keeping some for myself. I can't wait to see what else will be coming!
Also, from the same woman, I may be getting a knitting machine. Or two. I am hoping I will be able to afford them both, but I am not sure about that. I may ask my parents to purchase them for me, and pay them back. If they have all the parts, and are in good condition, I will definitely have to think about it seriously.

In other news, I finished my second baby blanket! The shower is this Sunday, so I now have plenty of time to work on other projects. More on those soon!

A Tall Order

Sunday was the Market at The House. I had a table that my friend, Sue, was running for me as I had to work in the restaurant. I did really poorly, I am assuming because I couldn't be at my own table. No fault to Sue, who is an amazing jewelry maker, I blame it fully on not being able to talk to potential customers.

I am making some changes in the way my life is heading. I haven't been putting myself first for a long time, and I am suffering because of it. Not only have I been suffering, but so have the people I love. My relationships with many people are falling apart, and I can't stand it anymore.

In other, more exciting news, I have an order for one hat from a relative, and one from a friend. The friend might be ordering several more hats for his clothing line in the near future!! Fingers crossed for that!

Knit The Stash Is Over

I have to give in, I have to give up, I have to fold. There is no nice way of putting it, there is no way I will make any noticeable progress on the stash, more than I have done now. I will still be knitting like crazy, but I am about to have a setback to dwarf all other set backs. More details will come as it unfolds, and I don't want to spoil anything yet.
Regardless, I've knit quite a few things as part of this challenge. I think I will make some knitting goals for 2012, and hopefully make a dent in my stash that way.
Sorry to be so vague, I promise to shed some light soon!

Monday Update

Super busy day today, and I almost forgot to post!! I've been knitting like a crazy person, and I've busted out the Knifty Knitters again. I've finished a couple hats, and I'm working on another. All the ones I have so far ate one colour, and the current is grey and pink.

Excuse the poor lighting, I'm at work.
I'm hoping to have a total of 10 hats by Sunday. Only time will tell if I can reach that.

Three Steps Back

Always the way with me, I start making progress, and I set myself back.
I finished up that neck warmer, and a purple scarf. So two items made. Neither of them finished the skeins, though. I probably have enough yarn left for one more item from each of them.
Now, the steps back. Michael's had some of the yarn I use on sale for a decent price. I picked up three skeins total. This "knit the stash" thing is hard! Especially considering I have so many shows coming up. I would really like to stay within my stash, but selection is really getting limited. Once all the shows are done, I will crack down and knit away at the stash. Bit by bit, I can make it through, I know it.

In other awesome news, I was asked by a woman I know through craft shows if I'd like to sell in the store she is opening soon. I plan on having a few winter wear for her before the holidays, Then, throughout the year, I will have button earrings, and a few small knitted things.

I have three craft show days coming up, possibly two more, the store to knit for, and my Etsy shop. This is going to keep me busy!

The Handmade Gift and Shopping Guide

This morning, Rick and I were photographing items to put in the Etsy shop. I logged into Etsy to check the prices of a few items, and I noticed a convo that I hadn't read. I opened it up, and I just about screamed, I was so excited. It was a note from Gilliauna, saying she featured an item from my shop on her blog! I've seen the blog several times before, and i'm sure many of you have, as well.

I'm so happy that I am getting some media coverage in different places. I know that local coverage is helping my sales. I have had a few people contact me recently because they saw something I made in the paper or on a blog, and they purchase from me in person.

Over all, I am definitely improving all around. Rick and I are going to be photographing all of my items in the next few days, I'll start posting items, and of course, keep knitting more.

I've finished one scarf and one neck warmer in the past couple days. That finished up two balls of yarn. I started on another neck warmer, as well. This brings me to nearly 50 items made, and I am almost even with my skeins in vs skeins out/used.

Fashion Show Follow Up

While I was at the F is for Fashion Show, I talked with my friend Josh. He writes for The Lance, the weekly newspaper at the local university. He interviewed me for an article he was writing, and I just picked up the paper and read it.
Here is a portion of it:

In addition to the dresses in Shkreli’s Dilly Daisy line, Friday’s show featured andal-lopez, Denial, Never Hopeless, Rejected, Something Clever, That’s Sew Sarah and Nicole Drouillard’s Knit, Nicole, Knit! line.
Drouillard has been knitting and sewing since the age of 10, but “F is for Fashion” was her first fashion show.
“I have scarves and neck warmers and cowls,” Drouillard said of her contribution to the show. “I also have hats, but none of the girls are wearing them because they all have fancy hair.”
Drouillard has been active within Windsor’s art circles and has sold her garments at craft shows and art sales for the last eight years. Now, Drouillard is looking to turn knitting into a full-time gig.
“I’ve been working the math out for it, figuring out how much I’d have to make and if it’s worth it,” Drouillard said. The business aspect can be foreboding, especially in the face of cheaper alternatives.
“People can go to Wal-Mart and pay $5 for a knitted hat. I hand-make a knitted hat and I charge $25. Each piece probably takes me two hours, and the yarn costs at least $5, so I’d be making about $10 an hour. And what I charge doesn’t even cover promotional costs, or fees to get into shows. It’s the math that’s hard, but I definitely want to. I know of a lot of people that are doing it and doing it really well.”
For Drouillard, being part of the show is necessary to satisfy her ambitions.
“I have seen a few people here that I do know through other events, but I’m seeing a lot of people who I’ve never met before. So I hope I can find … stores to sell in or other fashion activities to take part in.”
The ability to network is a major draw for all the designers, no matter how successful. Besides the business aspect to networking, the fashion show provides an opportunity for designers to admire each other’s work.

Monday Update?

Happy Monday! Like I mentioned last week, I won't be doing the self portrait posts anymore. I look grumpy in the photos most of the time.
So I think I will be doing Monday Update type posts, where I fill you folks in on what I've been up to for the past little while.
I finished up the purple/plum scarf, and that used up the rest of the skein. I also made a brown Homespun scarf. I still have enough of that skein for at least one more. Just a few minutes ago, I finished up a spring time scarf. It's a simple drop stitch pattern that makes it nice and airy.

This weekend was the craft show in Kingsville. I sold a few items. I didn't sell nearly enough to call knitting a part time job, but I did make my goal. I am starting to track what sells, when it sells, and for how much. I am sure certain items and colours will sell better, and I want to be sure I am aware. I've been sporadically doing this since I started doing craft shows, but I really need to stay on top of things.
This is more or less how my space was set up for the weekend. We had 6x6 spaces, so I set the table along the side. I am very happy I had the wall behind me to hang my shawls and cowls from. They really drew people in to look at them. I only wish I'd sold more of them.
That wood fence looking thing belongs to the woman who was next to me (also named Nicole). She had some awesome wooden holiday decorations, all hand painted, or hand carved. It was excellent. She was super nice, and her two sons and I talked during most of the show. It was really nice having people nearby I could hang out with during the quiet times.
Overall, I had a good time at this show. I don't think I will do it again, though, as many of the other vendors were selling yard sale type items, or reselling mass produced garbage. It's almost insulting having people who do such things set up at a Craft Show.

Craft Show Progress

Knitting like a crazy person is paying off. I've finished three scarves in the past couple days. They are all made out of Homespun. Olive green, a nice coral-y orange and a really cool variegated blue. That finished up two skeins.
I've also started on a purple/plum Homespun scarf. This one will likely finish up this skein, as well.

I am starting my inventory list right now. I hope this isn't as overwhelming as it was last time I did it!

Happy Monday! And Happy Thanksgiving to the Canadians. We don't have anything big planned for this weekend. Saturday night, we went to Rick's brother, and future sister-in-law's house for dinner. Tonight, we are going to his parents.

I just noticed how unhappy I look in most of my self portrait posts... I think I might stop taking them, and replace the Monday post with something else.
I am currently working on the Homespun scarf I started last night. I should finish off the skein today.

I need to make an inventory list soon. I don't want to have to scramble in the couple weeks before a craft show to make up more stock. I will be able to quickly see how many of each style of item I have, the colours and price. I might include the cost/amount/type of yarn used in each one, and the date completed if I want to really get fancy.

Do any of you keep inventory lists for your products?

Fashion Show Recap, and Production Progress

The show went well Friday night. I got a lot of great feedback, and met some new people. I had about a dozen pieces in the show, and they were all well received. A few people told me after that the scarves and shawls were their favourite items in the whole show. Unfortunately, I didn't sell anything, but I am ok with that. I did tell a lot of people about the upcoming shows, so hopefully I see some of them there.
I've been trying to work on scarves the past couple days. I noticed I don't have as many scarves as I do neck warmers. I want to find a good balance. Plus, scarves are a little easier to pay attention to when I am doing other things.

I finished one pink scarf, and used the remainder of a skein of Homespun. Starting on another scarf immediately.

Confidence

Lately, I have really been thinking about turning knitting, and creating as a whole, into a full time job. I don't have the focus or time, currently, to be able to promote and create as much as I'd like to. I know if I had a set schedule from week to week, I could better use my time to create, photograph, list and promote.
What is making me think of this more now, than usual is what has happened in the past couple days.

Without any sort of effort on my part, I've sold four pairs. Two of them were to a woman that has purchased some in the past. The other two were pure luck. I had all my earrings with me in a large bag, so that the first woman could pick the ones she wanted. When I met the second, we talked about handmade, and knitting, and then I said I made earrings. Immediately, she asked to see some. I said I had them with me, out of pure coincidence. She went through them quickly and pulled out two pairs and purchased them immediately. I was floored, and incredibly excited! This woman, who I'd never met, liked my things! And we weren't in a shopping environment!
These two purchases really gave me a boost of confidence.

Lately, I've also been included in several treasuries. I've been keeping track of them here, if you want to check them out. Many of them were made by members of a treasury team I am a part of. But others are from people who happened to come across my items in some way. If I could list more items, I'm sure I could get into more treasuries, and in time, get more hearts, and more sales.
I really want to make a full time living from this. I just need an extra push.

Self Portrait Monday: October 3, 2011

It's almost the end of Monday, and I am just now having a chance to blog. It's been a busy day today, with some errands to run, some cleaning to do around the house, and now I am at work. It's quiet now, so I have a chance to do a quick update.

I'm still working on the second baby blanket. I can crank it out pretty quickly, because it's just straight garter stitch. The only problem is that it's starting to get heavy. I have to tuck it under my arm, or knit with my hands close to my lap, otherwise, my wrists get tired really fast.
This Friday is the Fashion show, and I am really excited for that.
Rick comes back from his vacation tomorrow. We are possibly going to pick up a Kobo reader each in the next few days.
Life is great!!

One week until the fashion show, and I am still unsure what I will be showing. And I need to figure out what I will be wearing. This could get silly.

If I am extra quiet the next few weeks, it's because I am preparing for the upcoming shows I have, and because I have a load of other things going on right now.

Self Portrait Monday: September 26, 2011

It's Monday once again! I am a little late in the day with this post, but it's here!
I am currently casting off an infinity scarf, made out of Bernat Berella 4, in Ultra Pink. It's one of the Susan G Komen colours. I picked this yarn up ages ago, and I am finally using it now. This is the second infinity scarf in the past couple weeks. The first one, which I blogged about last week, is a really nice, bright blue. I will hopefully have pictures of all of these after the fashion show.
Wait, I don't think I've mentioned that yet... On Friday, October 7th, I will have a few pieces in a local fashion show. I'm not sure how many pieces just yet, so I am trying to make a variety of items, and then decide which to use once I see what the models will be wearing. Because I am doing accessories, I will be paired up with a t-shirt designer.
In addition to the fashion show, I have a two day craft show in the middle of October, and a one day show at the end. I will be knitting my little fingers off until then!

I Missed Monday

Yes, yesterday was Monday, and normally, I post a self portrait. But, I worked yesterday morning, and when I got home, Rick and I had dinner, and then we went out to see a movie. (Drive, with Ryan Gosling was AMAZING. Not what I expected, but definitely great)
Just a quick update here, nothing fancy, because I'm not feeling great, and I have to get my butt to the gym.
I started an "infinity scarf." I kind of hate that name, but that's the only thing to call it. It's pretty long, 10x10 rib, and I'm enjoying the knitting. At some point, I messed up and switched the direction I was knitting in. I had a big glob of yarn to sort out and I had no idea what to do. I ended up frogging a couple rows, and suddenly the yarn was going what I thought was backwards. Then, I realized that was forwards the entire time.
Have you ever done that?

Icelandic Stash Enhancement

Once I found out I was going to Iceland, I knew my yarn stash would grow. I tried to keep it reasonable, and I think I succeeded.
I purchased just nine skeins of yarn, and one of them has already been used fully. A second is about 80% used.
For some reason, they are uploading the wrong way. I've tried rotating them several times, and they don't want to stay. Anyway, six skeins of Bulkylopi from Istex. I bought all of these from the Handknitting Association of Iceland. The larger of the two stores in Reykjavik, the one on Skólavörðustígur, has quite a yarn selection. One of the medium grey has been turned into a cabled neckwarmer for Rick. It's starting to get cool here, so he should be able to wear it soon when he takes the dog out. I am making another neckwarmer for myself with the darker grey. This one is also cabled, but not in the same way as Rick's. Once they are both completed, I will have a photo of them.
The second bunch of Icelandic yarn I got is from the Thingborg Wool Centre. If I understood correctly, it is both hand spun and dyed. The label on them all say Cochineal, and I am assuming that is what was used to dye it, but I cannot be sure. Each skein is about 28 grams. I am hoping to make some sort of lacy little neck thing out of it. I'll have to see exactly how much I have, and go from there.
Two nights ago, Rick and I had to make a Michael's run for some cotton. The other lovely lady I know that is having a baby found out she is having a girl. She's not a pink fan, so I had to pick up two small skeins of another colour for her blanket. Two of the small Bernat skeins are all I picked up.
Overall, I am up 11 skeins, and then down one, for a change of +10 since the last update. This brings me to a net change of +6.
I've also knit an additional four hats for LeeLee hats, which I don't yet have a photo of. I ran a table at a show today for them, and did two of the hats there. Since I started the Knit The Stash attempt, I have made 40 items! That's not half bad, considering I started at the end of June. I am going to try to power through some of my smaller skeins so I can actually feel like I am making progress. Two steps forward, four steps back. Isn't that how it goes?

A Quick Iceland Mention

Back home safe and sound, though a little tired. We had an amazing time. I saw lots of sheep, bought two lopapeysur, bought NINE skeins of yarn, and ate so much delicious food, and so so SO much more.

I met Ragga from Knitting Iceland, who was absolutely awesome. She took a photo of Rick and I in our lopi sweaters and put them on LopiLove.com

We met some great people from all over the world.

I knit a cabled cowl with one of the skeins for Rick. Started a second one for myself. Also cabled, but not as extensively.

I also purchased a pair of hand knit socks and mittens from a little shop just outside of Selfoss. I am pretty excited to wear them. Rick got an amazing hand knit hat from The Þingborg Wool Center (pronounced Thing-Borg)
I almost pet some sheep (more on that another day) but I did managed to pet a few cute dogs.
Overall, our trip was fairly fibre-oriented. I will certainly be posting more about the entire trip in the upcoming couple weeks. It's still a lot to process, and I am much too tired to do all that right now.

Happy Monday!
This past weekend was a long one. I volunteered saturday evening in the beer tent at a local festival. I do this every year. This one was a bit different, though. Usually, I find myself serving the wine coolers, but this year I was on the beer side. Most of my evening was spent in the refrigerated transport truck moving cases of cans onto the conveyor so they could roll out of the truck as needed. When I wasn't in there, I was moving the cases to the tubs of ice they were being held in before being served. All in all, I had a lot of fun. I was a bit sore after, but I am fine now.
I added a couple pages at the top of my blog. There is now a short About Me, as well as a list of all the treasuries I've been featured in. I will be adding more to this Page section as needed.

The other day, I had to restart my Colonnade shawl. I was knitting just fine, and the needle slipped out, and there were ladders starting all over the place. Rather than mess around trying to get everything back on the needle, I figured it would be faster to just restart. I haven't had as much time to knit as I'd like, and I am really thinking I won't have it finished for Iceland. I will bring it regardless. It will make for good knitting while we have down time.
I've finished a couple small projects in the last week. I will try to blog about them before leaving, but I am not sure if that will be possible.
Hopefully, I will be able to post from Iceland. If not, I hope you all stay safe! I will return with lots of fun things to share!

The Colonnade Shawl

There is something I really love about shawls. I don't know what it is, but I find myself wanting to knit them all the time. It might have something to do with Stephen West, though. I fell in love with Boneyard the first time I laid eyes on it. I finished mine in a couple months. I haven't worn it much, but I plan on wearing it as often as possible this winter.

This morning, I cast on for Colonnade. I have changed the yarn used. I am using Ultra Alpaca (Fine) from Berroco. (Now that I think of it, I may have said it was from Bernat in the past. My mistake) It's an absolutely lovely dark blue, appropriated called Blueberry. It's not just blue, though. When you look closely, there is definitely some emerald green, burgundy and plum. I love this yarn, even though I had to wind it into a ball by hand. All 433 yards of it. I am planning on following the pattern to the letter, but making the shawl larger.

I did find that I messed up somehow at the beginning so I had to frog it completely. But, I have the pattern for the first section memorized, so that's definitely a plus.

I should really get to knitting. I am hoping to have this done or almost done for Iceland.

Moving Forward

Sorry I missed Monday. I didn't have my computer with me, and I am just now getting time to blog.
In this past week, I have rid myself of 17 skeins/balls of yarn!! They all went to LeeLee Hats. I did acquire one ball though.
Rick and I stayed at his parents for a night, and I underestimated my yarn needs. I only brought about a half skein of Homespun, and I blasted through that really quickly. I picked up one rather large skein from Zellers. I figured it was balanced out with the one skein I finished.

I also made EIGHT baby hats! They are all different. The Homespun was turned into two teddy bear hats. They're not perfect, but I am definitely working on the pattern. I really want to make more of them. The one pictured is the first one I made. The top is a bit pointy, but I think I have that fixed.
The second, rather awful photo, is of all of them. Three all white, two teddies, a white with purple stripes, and then a black and purple, and a white and purple. As a group, LeeLee Hats is taking part in Clicks For Babies. We are making purple hats to raise awareness of Shaken Baby Syndrome and Abusive Head Trauma. I will be making more and bringing them to Tracy, hopefully before Rick and I go to Iceland.

A Finished Baby Blanket!

The baby blanket has been finished! It was actually finished on Tuesday, but I've been working and puttering around, and I just haven't blogged about it.

I used two and a half balls of the pink yarn, and an equal amount of the white. I have TONS of yarn left. I was totally thinking I would run out. I probably have enough for two more of the same size. Another friend of mine is expecting, and I am waiting to find out what she is having.

I just realized this, but both of these lovely ladies are named Nicole (both different spellings than mine) Crazy, no?

The final measurement is right around 25 inches square. It is cotton, so that will definitely change.

When I do baby blankets, I do them just large enough to be used in a car seat or stroller. I don't want to do anything gigantic so the baby can't tote it around later in life. I never had a blankie, but I know many people who are in their 20s or 30s and still have theirs. I want to help comfort these babies when they start to grow up.

The final tally for this blanket is TWO balls used. Out of the NINE that were purchased. Holy moly, I was hoping I'd use more! It will all get used! Even if I have to make a million dishcloths out of it!

In other exciting news, a pair of my earrings was featured in a treasury today! It's called Let's Go Purchase Something. I am hoping people will do that!
I have been working on some treasuries, myself. I am really hoping that this will help people notice me and my shop a little more. I've joined a couple teams, and I have already gotten a few hearts because of that.

I hope all is well for all of you! There are just a couple weeks until we leave for Iceland now. I am getting really excited now!

Self Portrait Monday: August 15, 2011

It's Monday, and I'm having leftovers for lunch. Rick and I went out for fish and chips last night, and I am attempting to eat my coleslaw. I am really not a fan, but I wish I was! I also have a few fries left, so that's the other part of lunch.
This past week was pretty awful for the most part, hence the lack of blog posts. I considered just shutting the blog down entirely. No warning, just hitting the delete button. Then I realized I wasn't thinking clearly, and I am glad I didn't delete this!
I've been knitting exclusively on the baby shower gift. I couldn't keep a secret, and I showed the mother what I had done so far. She loved it!! I can't wait to finish it and give it to her. I'm two balls in for the pink, and I have no idea how many more I will be using. Another lovely lady I know is expecting. If she is having a girl, I will likely knit her a blanket out of the pink I have left, with another colour. Who knows, I might even have enough of the white remaining!
Later today, I am helping my friend Jodi paint her new office at The House. That should be a load of fun. She is the one that taught me how to spin. I am hoping to bring some of my hanks to have her help me wind them once she is moved in fully.
There are only 19 days until we leave for Iceland. I am getting nervous and excited.

Self Portrait Monday: August 8, 2011

It's Monday, once again! Hope all is well with all of you.
Rick and I are starting the Master Cleanse today. We're two glasses of juice in, and it's not that bad. I like maple syrup and lemon, so other than boredom, I don't see any issues.
I am cranking through the yarn I bought for the baby gift. This is all that remains from the first ball. I should have it finished in less than an hour, and have the second one started right away.
I have also rid myself of three skeins of yarn, two of which were about the size of my head. In addition to those, I gave LeeLee hats another five hats. I am determined to get this stash to a manageable size.
I finished a dishcloth this morning, as well. I have almost enough dishcloths to fill my basket for craft shows! If I could make a dozen more, I'd be more than happy.

Two Steps Forward, Nine Steps Back

I won't sugar coat it, I have purchased more yarn. Nine more balls, to be precise. All of these are for a baby shower gift, so they will be used fairly quickly.
I don't want to post photos until I have given the gift to the recipient, because I am not sure if she follows my blog. The two colours are white and hot pink. This particular shade of pink is my absolute favourite.
I have to start knitting the gift soon. The shower is in the middle of September, just after we come back from Iceland. Between now and the shower, I need to finish the gift, and get my Citron Shawl finished. The plan for that is to finish it up on the plane to Iceland, and have it ready to wear for the trip. That plan is not set in stone, but we shall see how it all works out.

An Update on Charity Knitting

LeeLee Hats has a goal of putting a hat on every baby that is born at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. With the number of volunteers that have joined this group, I can see that happening within a year.
I've been knitting with LeeLee Hats for a while, and donated quite a bit. I am up to 47 hats for the babies in the NICU. I have also donated loads of yarn, which has helped other members knit and crochet so many more. I am nowhere near as many hats donated as some of the other volunteers. They often bring in 30 hats at a time, to every meeting. There are meetings every two weeks. Some of those ladies, and their husbands, are machines, I swear!
I've posted a photo of my first batch of hats already, and it's time to post the rest.
There were a couple more that I've made, but they were grouped with some other hats knit by other members. Just pretend you see two more hats than are pictured here! I also still have about 4 or 5 hats to sew up and donate.
I am pretty sure we are over 2000 hats given so far. As soon as I talk to Tracy, I will find an exact number.
We have quite a few events coming up in the next few months that will help us get even more hats made and donated.
LeeLee Hats is at the forefront of a international day of knitting. On Friday, September 30, everyone is encouraged to knit as part of Knit-A-Thon North America. There are some really neat events being organized in different parts of the world that day. I don't know of all the details, but I do know that Ireland has something to do with it.
I will certainly be posting more information as I get it.

Holy flying time! I can't believe it's August. Only one short month until our Icelandic vacation!!!
But, between now and then, there is still much time.
Twenty-two dishcloths! That's how many I've made recently. I've tied in all the ends, now I just have to trim them.
About half of them are spoken for (between my Mom and Sarah) and the others will be for sale. I am still unsure about putting them in the Etsy shop. There are so many sellers that have them available, it will probably just a waste of a listing fee. I think I may just put them on the Facebook page, and they will be available for people local to me to purchase.
Since the last update, I have finished two dishcloths. One of them is the purple and white here, and the other is for my mom. That one finished up another skein. The purple is getting pretty low. One more cloth will finish it off, for sure.
I have also finished a few hats for LeeLee Hats. I think two more of those. I did finish one skein of brown with those. When I finally get to another knit club meeting, I will be donating even more yarn.
I am starting to realize how much yarn I have that I won't ever use, for whatever reason. I will donate it to this group so it can be used.

It's Monday once again! I am knitting at the chiropractor's office, as I just finished my weekly massage. Rick is in getting his back worked on right now. Our massages aren't the nice relaxing ones people enjoy getting... Because of the car accident that happened in May, we're both still a bit out of whack. This is to try and get us back in place.

I am working on a hat for LeeLee Hats again. I want to get 10 done total, and then go back to working on winter accessories.

Speaking of winter accessories, I am planning on approaching a few local stores with some of my items to see if they will sell on consignment. I am not completely sure on the percentage I should offer them... I will have to figure some things out before doing this, but I would really like to be in a handful of stores soon!

Slow and Steady Wins The Race (or something like that)

There is some progress being made on the stash! I have been working on dishcloths for a while, and I think it's time to show them.
I made the blue ones for Rick's friend, Sarah. She asked for blue, and gave no other specifications, and this is what I came up with. Not sure if she wanted solids, but I can always make more, if she does! She asked for 3, but I made 4 because I still had some of the lighter blue left. This finished off one small skein of cotton.
I still have to weave in the ends, but other than that, they are done, and I am very happy with them.
The pair of neutral coloured cloths is for my Mom. Just one more cloth to go, and all of hers will be finished. This finished off another skein! I've made a whole bunch of cloths for her, and I will be giving them to her this weekend. I hope she likes them.
I have also finished quite a few hats for LeeLee Hats in the past couple days. They use up yarn that I otherwise wouldn't be using. Three made so far, with another on the needles. I still have to sew them up, as I am knitting them flat, but they are looking super cute!
With these knits, I am adding 9 finished objects, and 2 finished skeins. With the next post, I should be adding at least 2 more finished skeins!

I Renewed Some Items in my Shop!

A few of my items were expiring soon, so I decided to renew them! I've done a few so far, and I will be doing more over the next couple days.

I still have quite a few of my cotton bangle bracelets available. I've sold a few offline, but still none in the store! There are always other colours available. Also, if you wanted to get a few of them to wear together, let me know in a convo, and I can bundle them together at a savings for you! I am planning on listing more colours once I have a chance to photograph them.
I am also renewing some earrings. This olive green pair has gotten some attention lately in the way of views and hearts. I love their colour, and the size is just big enough to be noticed, without being HUGE.

Self Portrait Monday: July 18, 2011

Today's portrait is a little bit different.
I FINALLY went to get my passport photo taken.
It kind of looks like a mug shot. But, I can kind of see a resemblance to both of my parents in it. Not the mug shot part, just the shape and features of my face.
This photo will serve me well for the next 5 years. With Iceland in September, and I am sure a few visits to Michigan in the following months, it will be used often. I still need to get my guarantor to sign the back of one of these, and then head down to the application office.

In other more knitting-centric news, I helped my friend Tracy at a craft show. She is the lady behind LeeLee hats. The show was a let down, but we had fun regardless. I finished knitting one hat, and I gave her 6 skeins of yarn. This puts me at 16 items made, and a total change of four less skeins. Not bad, so far, I'd say. I've started working on another hat already, and I still have a dishcloth on the go. I will post all my recently made dishcloths later this week.

Sponsorship?

Hello everyone! Sorry it's been such a quiet week. I've been working quite a bit, and therefore, not knitting a lot.

I have been considering having sponsor spots on my blog for the past few weeks. I really do enjoy reading blogs, and I have seen a lot that have added sponsor spaces in the past little bit. I am starting to think that this might be a good idea for mine. I don't expect a lot of money off it, but being able to pay my hosting and domain renewal would be lovely. I would also like to advertise my blog in other spaces to bring more traffic here.
What do all of you think? Ultimately, if there is little to no interest, then I will not bother. But, if at least a handful of you would be interested, then I will figure out the logistics of it. I am planning on doing month long spots, and only one size (probably 125x125.) I will do a sponsor profile post for each, and then post a few of my fave items from each shop, or fave posts from their blogs. There are a couple other ideas I have rolling around in my noggin, but those are going to be a secret for now!

Hello Monday!! It's been a loooong weekend. I worked a food festival with Rino's Kitchen, and that just about knocked me out. I ate till I almost burst... On Friday, Saturday AND Sunday.
Saturday was my anniversary with Rick. He was at his parents because I was working all weekend, so we didn't do anything until today.
I've also finished knitting a couple dishcloths. Two more cloths added, and one skein finished. I m now up to 15 items made, and +2 as far as skein count goes. Soon, I will catch up!
I haven't been knitting all that much the last few days. Between work, the gym and the weather, I haven't really felt like doing much.
I did, however, go to the LeeLee hats knit club on Saturday. I finished half a hat, and left it there so I could continue it next time, or someone else can work on it.
I should get back to knitting. I have an order for some blue dishcloths from a friend, and I want to get them made!

Woohoo! I got a convo yesterday that said I was featured in a treasury! I am so excited. This is only the second time one of my items has been in one, and it's awesome!
I also made some new earrings a couple days ago. I've bought quite a few buttons over the past few months, and I haven't made any earrings in quite some time. Some of my listings are expiring soon, so I am hoping to have these new ones up before then to help increase their chances of being sold.
Rick and I are picking up a new camera later today for the Iceland trip, and I am hoping that it will take decent macro photos. Photographing my stuff is definitely my least favourite part of all this, but it has to be done!

Self Portrait Monday: July 4, 2011

Happy Fourth of July to my American readers, and happy Monday to everyone!
I have three more dishcloths made! The white striped cloth and the middle seed stitch one finished of another skein of cotton. I am up to 13 items made, and a net change of plus three for my number of skeins of yarn. Just one more skein of cotton to use up and I will consider myself even. The other two that I added will be used in a few weeks. They will be my plane knitting for Iceland.
I am just a few rows away from having the baby blanket complete. That's a pretty large ball of yarn, so I am happy about that.
After these are done, I will probably make some baby hats. I have quite a few skeins that I have earmarked for some charity knitting, and a lot of them are on the small side. Instant gratification!

I am getting so excited for Iceland. There are about 60 days left until then, and still so much stuff to do. I am going to try to sell some of my knitwear and earrings between now and then to have some extra spending money. I will hopefully be listing some stuff in the next week or so in my downtime. I've been working extra shifts because of our new extended hours, so my free time has almost disappeared!

Dishcloth Progress and a Crazy Awesome Announcement!

Despite my minor set-back earlier this week, I am making some progress on the stash.
Five more dishcloths made, and one skein eliminated.
The top two cloths are for my mom The rainbow is one of the CoolSpun Cotton balls she bought me. the other three are just other cloths I've made.
I am working on a few more cloths for her, as well as the baby blanket. I did a few rows yesterday, but it was so hot in the apartment that I just couldn't do any more!
I think I might post a few dishcloths in the Etsy shop. There are a lot of knitters who have cloths for sale, but they are mostly the regular "grandma's favourite" style with the yarn overs at the edges. Most of the cloths I've been doing are striped or patterned in some other way.
Anyone want to weigh in on this? Should I bother listing some cloths? Should I do packs of multiple cloths?

Ok, onto the amazing news. My boyfriend, Richard, has wanted to go to an amazing, far away land for ages. He got an email recently saying the plane tickets were close to half off. So, come mid-September, I will be doing a lot of firsts: first time on a plane, first time outside of North America, first time I'll use my passport (which I still have yet to acquire) and the final, and most important first...
My first time in Iceland.
We have the tickets, and we're getting our travel arrangements... arranged. We have a few must see things to do, and the rest of the time, we're sort of going to fly by the seat of our pants.
Rick and I are both planning on getting a lopapeysa, trying Iceland's world famous hot dogs (which are made with local meat, and therefore perfect for my food eating lifestyle), eating skyr, and hopefully, seeing some sheep.
If any of you have suggestions of things to do in Iceland, please let me know!!

I Messed up Already

I was doing so well! Knitting away at my cotton stash, making dishcloths, taking small bites at a time. I was even starting to organize a couple of the drawers.
Then yesterday, I went into Knit One Purl One with the intention of visiting with the owner, and knitting a few rows. But I started looking at the yarn. And that's when I started finding trouble.
Ultra Alpaca Fine caught my eye. There were a bunch of really nice colours. I was trying to find two of one colour so I'd have enough to make a shawl for myself. No big surprise there, to be honest. I have been on a crazy shawl kick lately. I have a whole bunch of patterns saved and bookmarked and planned. She looked in the back room, and could find two colours of every colour but the one I wanted. I was ready to give up, when I happened to look in a corner at another yarn, and I saw a little bit of dark blue shine at me. There was another skein of Blueberry Mix! I knew I had to take it home. And now, it sits next to me, awaiting the perfect pattern.
My Mom, who I went with, wasn't much help with keeping me on track. She bought 4 balls of CoolSpun Cotton for me to make her some dishcloths for their new camper. Two of the skeins match the interior, and the other two are super bright. I am hoping to get through these fairly quickly.

I also got the huge yarn donation bag from one of my mom's friends for LeeLee Hats. I am keeping just one of the skeins for myself to make hats. The rest, I am not going to bother counting, because they are not even allowed to enter the stash area. They are hiding in a closet at the opposite end of the apartment, so they can't try to sneak into my stash without me noticing.
I have, however, knit three more dishcloths. I am going to take photos of them after I knit a few more. I will probably start progressing to a few larger things after these. My mom needs a baby blanket for a shower gift, so I will do that. And I will do a bunch of hats to donate.

I think I will have enough of the stash cut down by Christmas to be able to fit it into storage. I am hoping that I can sell enough items so that my item stash doesn't get out of control.

It's that time again! Monday, Monday, Monday! I've already been pretty productive today. Went to the gym, did a couple errands on the way back, and I am going to make myself something to eat soon.

You are not seeing things... Part of my head is shaved. No, I did not have brain surgery, a brain scan or shock therapy, as I have told some of the whack jobs that questioned me. I just got bored and decided to get a nice summery hair cut.
I've been cranking out dishcloths pretty much constantly. I've finished a couple since my last post, but none of them have finished off a skein. I'll have to try and get a couple skeins knocked off so I can post about my stash killing effort again.
Life is pretty swell. I've been working a bit more which is great. I am working tonight, and the big annual fireworks show is tonight, so I'm hoping it will be busy before that starts.
How are things for all of you? What sort of summer knitting projects are you working on?
